Know Before You Ride
Page content
We want every eTrailz rider to enjoy their ride with confidence. UK rules depend on what you ride and where you ride it, so here is a clear summary of the official guidance before you head out. If you are unsure whether a model suits the way you plan to ride, talk to us before you order and we will point you to the right choice.
Electric bikes that meet EAPC rules
In Great Britain, an e-bike that qualifies as an Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) is treated like a normal pedal cycle. To qualify, it must:
- have pedals that can be used to propel it
- have a motor with a continuous rated power of no more than 250 watts
- stop giving motor assistance above 15.5mph
You can ride an EAPC if you are 14 or over. You do not need a licence, and it does not need to be registered, taxed or insured. You can ride it on cycle paths and anywhere else pedal bikes are allowed, but not on pavements. The bike should be marked with its continuous rated power and manufacturer, plus either the battery voltage or its maximum assisted speed.
Higher-powered e-bikes
An e-bike that goes beyond the EAPC limits (for example a motor above 250 watts, assistance above 15.5mph, or a throttle that is not approved) is classed as a motor vehicle, such as a moped or motorcycle. To use one on public roads it needs to be approved, registered, taxed and insured, and the rider needs the right driving licence and an approved motorcycle helmet.
Some of the higher-powered models we sell exceed EAPC limits. These are supplied for private land and off-road use only, with the landowner's permission, unless you have them approved and registered for road use yourself. Each product page shows the motor power so you can check before you buy.
Electric scooters
It is currently illegal to ride a privately owned e-scooter in public places in the UK, including roads, pavements, cycle lanes and parks. Riding one in public can lead to a fine, penalty points on your driving licence and the scooter being seized by the police.
The e-scooters we sell are for private land use only, with the permission of the landowner. Official rental schemes in some areas have their own separate rules and do not apply to privately owned scooters.
Kids' electric rides
Our kids' electric motorbikes and fat bikes are supplied for use on private land only, with the landowner's permission and close adult supervision. Please make sure young riders wear a properly fitted helmet and protective gear, and check the age and weight guidance on each product page.
Battery and charging safety
- Only charge with the charger supplied for your bike or scooter.
- Charge in a safe, dry place, away from exits and anything flammable, and avoid leaving it charging unattended or overnight.
- Do not modify or tamper with the motor or battery. Official guidance warns this increases the risk of fire.
- If a battery is damaged, swollen, very hot or smells unusual, stop using it and contact us.
Riding responsibly
You are responsible for using your ride legally and safely in the places you choose to ride. Derestricting, modifying or using a product outside its intended legal limits can make it illegal to ride and is not covered by warranty. Laws can change, so please check the latest official guidance before riding.
